FCP 7 - Playback fine within program - Sutter on Export
on Aug 3, 2015 at 7:15:48 pm

Greetings

720p 30fps AVCHD - Encoded by FCP at recommended 422LT looks fine when played within the program, but encounters stuttering (mainly on pans) when exported as Same as Source...or any of the Quicktime Conversions (QT 7.7)one can think of. Sequence is only 1:30.

Looks like a frame rate issue, but appears not to be, as I have been meticulous in trying to troubleshoot this problem.

I am on an older system (see below). Could this be a hardware issue?

Any thoughts, or work-around would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much.

Did you encode the files to Prores before importing? Or are you using the AVCHD files in a Prores sequence?

Alternately, could it simply be a playback issue?

Recently I had trouble with AVCHD but found a pending update in the App store which specifically solved errors with AVCHD in Final Cut. I don't know if it will be available for 10.5.8 though.

Also, when exporting using "Current Settings", try with "Make movie self compressed" and "Recompress all frames" are both checked.

Thank you for the quick response!

Yes. The files were encoded to ProRes 422 LT. I also tried 422 HQ, through both FCP itself and PavTube converter.

I have tried both compressing all frames and self contained movie.

I have noticed on playback, when monitoring framerate in QT, that it seems to vary and not hold true to the assigned framerate. I don't know if that's just the way QT is or some other issue. Again, the movie when opened within FCP, plays fine without stutter.

Thank you again.

Paul

Interestingly, you haven't mentioned the frame rate of the footage or the tiemeline.

Hi Dave -

I have tried several in an attempt to fix this problem.

Footage was shot 720p 30 AVCHD on a Panasonic 130A, footage was converted to ProRes 422 LT 29.97, sequence settings 29.97, Compressor settings ProRes 422 LT.

I have also tried encoding footage at 59.94, and using a 59.94 sequence/compressor settings.

Same issue upon export.

Thank you.

Do you see the same thing if you re-import the exported file into FCP?

Yes...when re-imported into FCP, the stuttering file...no longer stutters.

It sounds like an interlacing issue. Incorrect field order, perhaps? Or field order where there should be none, as in progressive-scan video recorded as fields?

Good Afternoon Dave -

I gave that a "whirl" as well...with the same results.

A new and interesting observation however...playback in QuickTime 10.1 seems fine (playback framerate also seems to be locked in at 29.97 with QT 10.1 ...whereas in QT 7.7 it fluctuates).

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Give the file to someone else. See if they can play it. If your array is filling up, it could be the cause.

And if you don't store footage on an array, that's even more reason to try it on a different machine.

Hi Dave -

I copied the file onto a Mac Air...running QT 10.1...and the file plays fine. So, I'm not sure I've really "solved" anything, except to determine that the file itself is "fine". I've also viewed the file on a smartphone...without issue.

So knowing it's a playback issue...do you know of any root causes of this except...to guess my system needs to become a boat anchor?

I don't think I have enough information to form an opinion on whether it's time to consign your machine to the scrap heap. Personally, I'd keep using it until it blows up.

Thanks for all the help Dave. I do appreciate it.

If I find a solution, I will follow up if anyone else is experiencing the same issue.
