FCP 7 - Render options in Video Processing Tab

COLOR PROFILE/MANAGEMENT for video. so: for a stop motion animation project, our source material at capture was still images on a DSLR, SRGB color profile. in AE (to correct flicker issues frame by frame), we worked in SRGB and exported large quicktime video files still in SRGB (in other words, we moved from still images for each shot to hi res concrete video files for each shot). Now we are working in FCP 7 and have to render/export all of these video clips. Under the Video Processing tab, we have to choose whether to 'always render in RGB' or to 'render 10-bit material in high precision YUV' or to 'render all YUV material in high precision YUV.' Which one do we choose? We've done some tests with one video clip and it does not look radically different when we choose the different settings. Also, we'll be screening the final movie in multiple places hopefully (internet, screening rooms, monitors). Any thoughts would be very much appreciated!

Well, since it's FCP 7, you can't beat ProRes 422.

What kind of files do you have to deliver?

Thanks for the response Dave. To answer your question, we are already using ProRes, but we are confused about what settings to select in FCP under Sequence Settings in the Video Processing tab. Specifically related to color management when doing the final render for export
As we've been workin in sRGB the whole time we are wondering whether we would choose 'render in RGB' or one of the options related to YUV.
Thanks in advance! Color is very critical for our project ;-)

if this is for broadcast, then YUV. if for digital projection in a theater, or for the web, RGB is fine. DVD/BluRay...also best to use YUV, as that's a television standard.

Hello Shane,

Thanks for this info.

My FCP 7 timeline is rendered as High Precision YUV and monitored for DCI color on a NEC monitor. The final work goes to film festivals.

I am about to get a I/O card that might output either RGB or YUV. That hasn't worried me until now.
My knowledge from manuals tells me that if it is ProRes (HQ) which is 10 bit, it should be rendered as High Precision YUV, so I am very sensitive when YOU say that if it goes to digital projection (film festivals), RGB is "fine".

Please do share, if it should be RGB or if it is just that RGB renders takes shorter times and would be "good enough" for digital projection in a theatre.

Would YUV be more useful in any way? Especially when plugin loaded...?

As always, your opinion is highly appreciated,
Alex
