Big Problem! Media Managed Footage is not relinking to NEW timeline sequence
on Jul 29, 2015 at 12:49:49 am

Hi Everyone,

First off thank you for taking the time to potentially solve this problem that could save my project I've been working on for 5 years!!!
So the situation: My editor is leaving the country and is taking a hard drive with her to polish the 2 hour film.
so she has MEDIA MANAGED THE MOST RECENT TIMELINE SEQUENCE with her.

Problem: After she media managed the timeline I sent her a new version of the timeline sequence with several changes to cut and now she is unable to RECONNECT THE MEDIA and a error message pops up.

Currently 75% of the edit is offline...
THe names of the clips haven't changed
some of the duration of each clip has changed a little bit but it still shouldn't show 75% offline...

My editor leaves for travel in 2 days but she need to solve it before leave the MOTHER DRIVES that contain all the raw footage...

Any suggestion is very very welcome

Thank you CC community!!!

Tiff

what you are attempting wont work.
Media Manager CAN change the names.
not always, but often.

you say you trimmed the media. you shouldn't do that.
that pretty much guarantees name changes,

the best approach would be to take all the media,
or not to trim it.

Hi Nick Thank you.

We are currently working with 48 tb of raw HQ footage... after media Managing it we got the timeline to
1.4 tb.... a more practical size to travel with versus 5 giant drives.

Because we are still making changes to the edit, what would you suggest for my editor to take with them in order to continue working on the edit ( original footage is not an option due to size)

Thank you Nick!

48TB? ok, that's a little hard to get into your carry-on luggage.

one solution (maybe the only one?) would be to use Media Manager to recompress the footage to an FCP approved format for the off-site edit.
this would allow you to take entire clips, without trimming them.
there are various format options avaialbe all the way down to Standard Def Off-Line RT

another less reliable solution would be to use the media you have created,
and use 3rd party tools to help you re-connect,
one is FCP re-connect,
another is Resole. you'd import an FCP XML into resolve, it is smarter than FCP at reconnecting,
then export an XML that you bring back into FCP,
BUT this is rather hazardous on a large project,
and would need some serious testing.

good luck!
