FCP 7 to FCP7 Recording
on May 28, 2015 at 4:39:10 pm

Hello,

I've a question regarding live recording of an FCP7 timeline sequence to another computers Timeline.

Can we make 1st FCP timeline sequence (Source) and other computer's FCP Capture window (say a macbook pro) as TARGET… ?

Without using a deck or a conversion HUB..

Just like live recording through a source (composite or firewire) ??

Thanks
ET

In a word, no.

Besides, it's a lot of unnecessary work when all you really have to do is export a timeline in Prores 422. You lose no image quality.

The only way to do this, and I have done this...is for both computers to have capture hardware...or "IO" hardware. Both need to have an AJA or Decklink or Matrox device for capture and output.

It can be done via FireWire or preferably FireWire 800.

Thanks David for your reply..

If it can be done through firewire 800 port, What would be the process..

I've got a macbook pro… and an 8core macpro tower with decklink 4k card installed..

I would really appreciate it..

Firewire only works if the footage and sequence settings are DV, DVCPRO HD, or HDV. Those are the only formats supported.

Oh, in fact, you can only output HDV via firewire if you have FCP prep it. Sorry, it's been so long, I forget the process. But unlike DV and DVCPRO HD...HDV cannot be played out in real time...a rendering/prepping process had to happen, and then you would click OK to output it. But that only works to HDV cameras or decks.

Firewire doesn't work with ProRes.

HDV-Conforming before output.

What Dave said. Quicker to export a quicktime from the source sequence and drop it on the other computers timeline. No need for fancy hardware interfacing or using dud codecs like DV and it would likely be the quickest too.
