Music Syn Issues
on May 20, 2015 at 11:59:31 pm

Hello everyone Weird problem I have:

I edit dance performance videos I use both sound the actual sound from the performance and the audio track of the music directly capture from the CD in AIFF format Imported to FCP.
Since I start to edit video in HD (at least is since I realize I have this problem but maybe no related) the music tracks are no in sync with the theatre sound. I sync the tracks and in the middle of the track the CD track is 00.00.00.02 late and get's worse at the end I have to cut the CD track when I notice the change and move it 02 earlier and if the track is long i have to repeat the cut several times. So start fine and loos synchronization. It never happen before. And nothing actually changed. Same venue same computer play the music in the theater same computer edit the video same cameras. Already happen in the last two productions I edited.
Does anyone have an answer?

Are you editing in the same frame rate as what was recorded? If you record at 29.97fps and edit at 30fps it will throw off the sync. Even worse recording at 24fps and editing at 29.97. Check timeline and camera frame rates.

Dear Joe:

Excuse my ignorance. I know how to change the frame rate in FCP but How do I know which frame rate my camera record. I have so Sony HD cameras Mini DV.
Does mini DV always record at the same Frame rate?

Thanks so much for your answer probably that is the problem

You should be able to see the frame rate in the file properties when you bring it into FCP. It has been a few years since I used FCP and I don't remember exactly where the information located. You can also open the file with QuickTime and look in the Inspector window.

Firstly convert the CD audio to 48khz 24 or 16 bit wav. Next make sure the Easy Setup frame rate matches the edit sequence frame rate exactly. Then import the file into the project and then into the sequence. It should not drift.

Drift is mostly caused by FCP stamping the incorrect frame rate due to a mismatch between the sequence settings and the Easy Setup. Also FCP hates audio that has the wrong sample rate. 48khz is standard for video.
