Reconnecting media in ProRes sequence with H.264 files
on May 1, 2015 at 6:05:43 am

I have some footage shot with a DSLR camera that records quicktime files in h.264 format. I converted them to prores, edited my project in FCP7, and converted the exported prores file back to h.264.

I don't have that exported file or the prores footage anymore and I want to create another h.264 file of the project but I'm not sure if I need to convert the original footage to prores again. Is it okay if I just reconnect the media with the original h.264 files or do I need to convert those files to prores again?

My thinking is that I should be able to just reconnect with the h.264 files and export the project, and even maybe have slightly better quality since I'm saving a step on converting. Is there a flaw in this thinking?

If it is okay to reconnect the media with the h.264 files, are there any advantages or disadvantages to this? Thanks.

FCP7 does Not play well with H.264 files. I'm afraid you'll have to re-create the conversion to pro res first.

What he said. Because when you use H.264 as source, and try to export, you'll have sync issues.

The thing with h264 in fcp is that sometimes it does work, sometimes it doesn't,
So it wouldn't hurt to try doing the simple approach first

Use a copy of your sequence in a seperate project.

If that doesn't work, and if you used log and transfer when you originally transcoded,
You should be able to create a trimmed offline sequence via the media manager,
And only re-transcode what you need.
