can't set up in and out points while importing
on Apr 26, 2015 at 11:18:23 pm

Hello all,
For some reason I am not able to set up in ana out points while importing. All I am able to do just select and import entire clip, which is unbelievably annoying. I am trying to import QuickTime movie. WhAt am I doing wrong?
Thank you in advance.

Importing simply makes a clip that points to the media as it exists...it doesn't make new media, or convert anything. It just makes a pointer to the media.

You can set IN and OUT points if you Log and Capture from tape, or if you Log and Transfer from tapeless media cards.

I should, but I can't. When I press I all I can get is a squeaky sound and the entire clip gets selected.

What is this footage? Where does it come from?

Which camera? If you want to get IN and OUT points, you first need to have the whole card structure intact. Second, you need the specific Log and Transfer plugin for that camera type. Then L&T will work. If the camera is very new (made within the past 4 years), there might not be support for that camera type. In which case you need to convert the footage with a third party converter. And then the resulting file you import fully...no way to do IN and OUT Points.

Unfortunatly its too late. The footage I got was copied from the card to my external hard drive. All clips are .mov files

MOV in what codec? MOV means Quicktime..but are they MPEG 4, H.264, ProRes? FCP only works with ProRes...or other FCP codecs. So you need to convert the footage to that format. And sorry, if they are MOV files, you cannot make IN and OUT points in FCP when importing, and only import the portions you want. Not even sure the third party converters offer that option. So you might be stuck with the full clips.

Sorry

Good codec. Just no IN and OUT points when importing.
