1920x1080 project looks squished on export
on Dec 20, 2014 at 7:25:36 pm

I'm in FCP 7. I'm trying to set up a project that will be comprised of still images. It needs to be 1920x1080. When I use Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920x1980, or one of the other sequence presets for that dimension, my timeline looks fine until I export or use the Digital Cinema Desktop Preview, where everything looks squished.

I feel like I'm making a rookie mistake here. It's been a while since I set up a project in FCP, so I must be forgetting something.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Arend,

Welcome to FCP 7's treatment of pictures, depending on format.

What type are you using?

In any event, have you tried to change the aspect ratio AFTER import?
In the Viewer, go to 'Distort' and try playing with the aspect ratio.

Hi, thanks for responding.

It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the pictures themselves, as I have some FCP text and that's getting distorted as well. Everything looks completely fine when I play it on the canvas. It's just the export settings that seem to be messing up.

Any thoughts?

What are your Sequence settings?
What are your export settings?

I'm using Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920x1080 24p 48khz for my sequence.

The export tests I've done have used the same.

Fcp is wysiwyg. Stumped with matched sequence/export you are having problems.

Could be pixel ratio is off on one side - .9 vs square pixels.

Hi John. My pixel ratio is setup at 1440x1080. I don't see a bigger option. I also tried changing it to square. That didn't work either.

Any suggestions on how to set up my pixel ratio?

Many thanks.

Make a 1920x1080 FCP edit timeline. Put the clips in it. They stretch out. Then export.

Yup, Dave is correct.

1440x1080 uses non-square pixels and stretches them out to fill 16:9 aspect ratio
