AVCHD 50i into FCP 6.0.6
on Nov 11, 2014 at 1:14:25 pm

Good afternoon,

I'm trying to get footage shot on the Sony NX70 (FX 1080/50i) into FCP 6.0.6 using Log and Transfer. The OS is 10.5.8. I can see the footage in Log and Transfer however it has a tendency to crash and, on completing a succesful import, it seems to be dropping about 40% of the frames. I've try changing around settings between ProRes 422 50i 25p and 24p but all import with the same re-interpretation in frame rate.

My question is two-fold:

1) Is there a compatibility or import issue that I'm missing?

2) Is there a way, as with Adobe Premiere, to "interpret" the footage into a new frame rate once imported?

Cheers
Richard

Sorry...the Sony NX cameras aren't compatible with FCP 6. They are BARELY compatible with FCP 7. Only when FCP 7.0.3 came out was it able to be imported. This is because every new camera made that uses the AVCHD recording format, uses a slightly DIFFERENT version of it. All makers tweak the format to make it better, or make it more what they want. So not all AVCHD is the same.

But not all hope is lost. There are third party conversion apps. THe one I recommend is ClipWrap2 by divergentmedia.com. They are always on top of the latest formats. In fact, they were my solution when the NX cameras first came out and Apple didn't support them yet.

Make sure to convert to ProRes...not re-wrap. FCP needs proRes.

Thanks for the reply Shane. Unfortunately the latest ClipWrap2 installer won't go onto the machines I have to work with as they're all on OSX 10.5.8, whereas Clipwrap requires 10.6. Can you think of either a slightly older piece of software that might work or any other work-around? I'm just about at the point of dubbing the cameras to DVCams over the A/V Composite cable :S

Cheers
Richard

Sorry...I don't. Contact the Divergent Media people and ask if they have an older version you can buy.

It's very tough to get old software.

Have tried ClipWrap 2.5.2 (version compatible with Mac OSX 10.5.8) and I'm still unable to take the footage in.

ClipWrap, on re-encoding (rather than rewrapping), seems to see the same issue with the files as FCP 6.0.6.

One thought I've had - is it possible the OS is unable to read the File System within the cameras properly?

Cheers
Richard
