RT Pop-up menu
on Oct 26, 2014 at 11:04:16 pm

Hi,
Thanks for reading...

I have searched in the fcp 7 manual, and it shows a very long pop up menu for the RT pop-up menu in the timeline w lots of choices for playback: see image below:

When I click there in my timeline, on the RT, the menu is VERY short...only a few items - see image below:

Why am I not getting all the options for the menu the manual shows?
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Warmly,
Hope

You are most likely editing footage that isn't in a real time codec. Real time codecs are the ones found in the Easy Setup menu. But footage like H.264, MP4...even DNxHD, those aren't FCP codecs and therefore are not real time

Shane, thank you for answering....

You are absolutely right...I am using a custom setup, not one of the FCP presets.
Thank you for taking the time to answer this....very kind of you.

I was researching more, and found a thread which i just posted too..

I did find that if I go into:

- fcp System Preferences : playback control tab,
- current sequence settings: Render Control tab.

I could change things.

Was hoping it could be easier than that....sigh

somehow in the past, I was able, even w many red lines showing in the timeline, to playback with everything showing - no red or blue unrendered frames.
Not sure how i was able to achieve that.

Thanks again,
Warmly, Hope

OK, answered my own question:

"unless you're using a supported Final Cut Pro native preset (there are a ton of them and there's rarely a reason you'd be working outside on of them) then you're not going to get the RT options that you're looking for."

The first time you launch FCP it interrogates your system and decides which RT options you will have based on your hardware. Having said that, I would have thought you would have more options with your computer. FCP7 has all kinds of wierdness when run on later operating systems than itself. Some people manage to run it but the forums are littered with similar complaints.

Roger,

Thanks so much for this info too.

I was, as mentioned above, really just trying to

1. set things easily
2. go back to a Shangri-La time when i could have red lines but still see all the frames when I hit the space bar to play the timeline.

Have no idea what settings I must have had then....seems to have been beginners luck.

Any idea on that?

Warmly,
Hope

Hi Hope, Shane made a very good point but do you get the same RT when set up for a standard project setting. If so I would trash your FCP preferences. FCP would then re-invent itself and decide on your RT options. Given your O/S, you do have Quicktime 7 installed?

P.S. I agree with your sentiments. :o)

To play back without rendering, press "opt-p" It'll play back as fast as the processors allow. But no audio will play. This is the way to audition effects before rendering them.

Shane...this is great...really great...thanks so much

also found that when i set the playback to 'unlimited' in the 'system settings' 'playback control', it is now playing even w the red lines including audio.
I attribute this great success to you helping me, both of you.

See settings used below (in case someone else wonders)

Set like this - Summary:

System Settings:playback control:
- RT: unlimited -
- (Play Base Layer Only (if render needed)
- then the default for everything else meaning all the rest of the boxes checked etc

Sequence Settings:
- all were just hi / default settings

RT Popup Menu:
- Play Base Layer Only

Note:
- no options for setting above in the RT pop-up menu due to the use of a custom preset.
- Opt P for playing w no audio (even w red lines)

Roger...when i use a standard preset i get all those great options, just like you say, for the RT popup....I tested it. You were absolutely right. (Yes, have QT 7 installed)

Thank you both so much....what a great break-thru this is for me. Opt P for playing w no audio, and 'RT-unlimited' to play w audio...at least in this case it is working
Warmly and Yippee,
Hope
