Final Cut Pro 7 Transitions Not Working On A Reversed Clip

I have noticed that everytime I try and add a transition to a clip I have sped up, slowed down or reversed. Final Cut Pro doesnt let me add it in, is there a reason for this? and how can I change it?

Have enough handles to allow for this?

Handles refers to a margin of a few extra seconds of footage on the ends a clip, enough to cover a transition. If the handles are not long enough, you can't make the transition work because you run out of frames before the transition is completed.
