FCP compatible firewire capture software
on Jun 2, 2014 at 10:49:50 pm

I have a client who has a bunch of standard def miniDV taped footage that he eventually wants to edit in Final Cut. He does not own Final Cut 7. He has a MACBOOK PRO with a firewire connection and a miniDV player that supposedly has a firewire connection. He has several hundred tapes that he only needs to pull a few seconds each from. He wants to do that part of the project himself. I suggested that he just rent Premiere for a short time from Adobe. But I was wondering if there are other software options that might be out there that I could suggest to him. He is thinking that there is a software program that might be $50 or less that can do the job. Please no smartass answers. I know what I'm asking for and I've already feel stupid for posing the question to the Cow's group of consummate pros. But he is a friend and I said I would try to locate something for him.

Sincerely,
Richard Martz

There really isn't an app that does that. Even iMovie, that's free, capture to .DV...a DV codec that isn't compatible with FCP. Drop a clip in and you need to render. Not to mention there's no timecode nor reel number.

The only apps for capturing DV tapes are editing applications.

I know nothing about how good it is, but it looks simple and cheap.

Actually QuickTime Pro (not QuickTime X) can do it too Not sure you can still get it easily.

Black Magic Design has a "free" capture and logging program, but I think you have to buy one of their boxes to get it.

I think AJA offers something similar, a utility for playbacks, but the price barrier you set may not allow it.
