FCP7 is adding 2:2:2:4 pulldown to 29.97 clips - why?

I have several projects in a 29.97 sequence that incorporate clips at 23.98. FCP7 adds its shitty pulldown where it dups every 4th frame. My remedy has been to lay all 23.98 content onto a new track, media manage those clips with 10 frame handles, run through AE to add 3:2 pulldown, then reimport my clips into FCP7 and conform to proper sync (it was tedious, and sucked).

What is killing me now is that FCP7 is adding it's pulldown to my new clips, which are all at 29.97 -and I can't really figure out why. These are essentially all new clips at 29.97 imported into my sequence, so there's no reason at all to think they're 23.98 and need pulldown added.

any ideas?

I hate to say it, but it sounds like a case of operator error. Have you double-checked everything?

I personally would check the AE Render Settings when I add it to the Render Queue. You did check the Add Pulldown box to the 23.976 comp and pick a pulldown pattern, right?

Yes, every file is at 29.97 and has a visible 3:2 cadence pattern when opened in QT.

Okay, then check the clips' frame rate and field order. At 1080, it's upper field first. In SD, it can be either order. At 720, there is no field order, because 720 is progressive!

That leaves the edit timeline. It too can have a field order, which should match the footage.

I was afraid you'd say that. Well, I'll run over the drill in After Effects:
  • Import your footage. Make sure it's at 23.976, not 23.98.
  • Put the footage into a 1920x1080 comp. The comp's frame rate must also be 23.976. It should NOT be 29.97
  • Add the comp to the AE Render Queue.
  • When the comp is in the Render Queue, open the Render Settings, click the Add 3:2 Pulldown box and pick a pulldown pattern. Use upper field first for a field order. It will now create an interlaced 29.97 movie.
  • Render in the codec of your choice, Probably ProRes.
If you're triple-dog-sure you did all that, I'm out of answers.

Other than the typical stuff, that is: shut down & restart the computer, open the FCP Render Manager for the project & delete the render files, trash FCP Preferences, and repair permissions in the OS.

And THEN I would be out of answers.
