Need New Laptop: Which One Do You Suggest?
on May 28, 2014 at 11:00:22 pm

My 4 year old MBP crashed, HD is clicking. So there seems to be 2 choices with the retina display 15". I am mainly a producer/DP and don't do heavy editing, I have an office 27" iMac. However, every now and then I may nee to do some FCP7 & X lite editing in a client's office. Here's my choices, I need to make a decision by this weekend:

15-inch: 2.0GHz
with Retina display
Specifications
2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz
8GB 1600MHz memory
256GB PCIe-based flash storage1
Intel Iris Pro Graphics

Built-in battery (8 hours)2
$1,999.00

OR...

15-inch: 2.3GHz
with Retina display
Specifications
2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz
16GB 1600MHz memory
512GB PCIe-based flash storage 1
Intel Iris Pro Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M
with 2GB GDDR5 memory
Built-in battery (8 hours)2
$2,599.00

Thanks for your advice

If money isn't an issue I'd buy the more powerful machine every time - might not make that much difference with FCP 7, but I'm guessing that if this laptop lasts 4 years you won't be using FCP 7, and whatever you use will work better with the bigger processor and ram.

I assume that the OS will be Mavericks - there have been questions on if it works with FCP 7, but you will need it for the current FCP X.

I think you have to go with the more expensive MacBook Pro because FCP 7 states that it needs the upgraded NVidia graphics card. I don't believe it is supported with the standard graphics card in your first choice listed. Check out the minimum specs required before you buy. Good luck!
