Choosing a Format and Editing Work Flow for a Grade 3 and 4 Class Movie
on May 13, 2014 at 3:21:36 pm

As the dad who edits, I've been enlisted to help my son's class make a movie.

Can anyone suggest the EASIEST workflow as we will likely have footage from ALL sorts of cameras...from iPhones/iPods to semi professional.

I imagine what we'll have to do is settle on a standard file format XD-CAM? Pro-Res? and then create a compressor droplet or MPEG streamclip preset so everyone can turn their footage into the same format.

Any thoughts/commiseration welcome.

It would be nice if each camera user did their own format conversion, say, using the free MPEG Streamclip, to standardize with. FCP7 likes ProRes, but you could also use DVCProHD setting.

If I were doing this, I wouldn't put the burden of converting onto the other parents. Most likely they won't have a clue how to do this. Some barely have computers. Get the raw files from them and do it yourself. IMHO.

Hopefully you have a clue what you are doing. :)

Yes that's what I ended up doing for the grade 2 movie...

This time the kids want to do the editing - so I'm trying to decide on the best format to convert everything into.

So will most likely collect all the footage, convert it into a standard format, and redistribute it to the 'editors'.

thanks

John

Wow, what a nice dad! That could take some time!

And here's something else to think about: I doubt all the kids will cut on FCP.

Can't you hear it already? "Mr. Hepworth, how come my computer doesn't see any of those video clips you gave us?"

This kind of falls into the "been there done that" category for me. I ended up cutting for the kids.

Yeah so far one of the kids has iMovie which I've only used on my phone...

Hopefully they can at least get a taste for it even if it lands on my lap. I remember cursing my way through the last one, all of which got washed away when the kids got to see it.

Yes, I can answer your question with two words, "Adobe Premiere."
