Exporting 25 chapters to DVDSP, need advice
on Mar 10, 2014 at 4:36:22 pm

So, a client wants me to take an hour-long video and build a DVD with a menu which allows selection of 25 chapters. Well, 24 direct-access chapters, and one button for "play all". I've done this before, but never with so many chapters, and all from one main program "asset".

So, my turn to ask for help for a change: WHat's the best, efficient way to execute this? I have little practice in using chapter markers in FCP7. But if I can mark up the timeline with chapter markers there, how do I export into DVDStudio Pro and have these chapters ready to use in composing my menu page?

While I'm asking, 24 chapters with titles on one screen isn't practical, so how would I do a multi-page menu in DVDSP to handle this beast?

It's been a while for me, too. I had to fire up FCP7. When you export your video from FCP, in the Markers selection there's a DVD Studio Pro Markers selection. I believe that includes all the markers you can set. But, there's also a selection for just chapter markers.

Thanks, John.

I just did a test with a short video, adding three chapter markers and exporting a self-contained movie. I brought that into DVDSP as an asset, and the chapter controls on the simulator snap to the right spots for those three chapter markers I had made in the master, so THAT works, And I can see how if I make a button, I can drag a program slider to define the first frame that button plays back., and the duration...

What I don't know is, how to make a menu with 25 titled buttons that's readable. Obviously, I need to make multiple pages of menus, but can anybody help me out with some hints and tips?

I do this in a couple of ways. The first menu is organized with links to sub menus which hold all the chapters. You use as many sub menus as needed. I always place next and previous buttons at the bottom of each sub menu for easier navigation. The second way is just to start with chapters 1 to whatever fits on one page and continue that way to the last chapter. Again, always with next and previous buttons. Hope this helps.

I was hoping there was some way that the pre-marked chapters on the self-contained MOV file "generates" the menu for me... but now it seems like "not so much"... but then, what was the point of the chapter marking in the master?

Unfortunately, it's a very manual process. The advantage of having the markers in the file is you don't have to link to 25 different pieces of media. It's always a pain and I have to constantly check that I haven't missed a link or how the remote control buttons act with the menus as someone scrolls up and down and left and right.
