Keyboard shortcuts vs System Preferences
on Feb 16, 2014 at 5:37:14 pm

Just had to perform a clean install of FCP 6.06 and forgot how to restore/find/reload the shortcut data. when I use keys such as the F9, F10, etc. it uses the apple keys; vol+, etc. I know it should be an easy fix but I've forgotten how (old age strikes again!).

Using on a mac pro with snow leopard 10.6.8

Thanks.

You'll need to look in System Preferences under the Keyboard option. In there under the Keyboard tab look for a check box that says "Use all F1, F2, etc keys as standard function keys." That box needs to be checked. Then that will revert the F-keys to acting as traditional F-keys instead of being tied to system OS tasks (like volume, brightness, etc.).

Thanks Ryan.
Tried your suggestion and when I pressed F10 it only went to a toggle which separates the windows. It could be a factor that the disk used for loading SL was meant for my mbp? Thought there might be something in the system prefs. keyboard shortcuts but not sure how to access it.

Thanks again.

John,
No. The OS is standard regardless of what computer it came with. If you want the F-keys to act like F-keys you'll need to modify your System Preferenes.

First is that check box (or you can hold down the "Fn" key on your laptop to produce the same effect), but you may also need to turn off the shortcuts of those F-keys under the "Shortcuts" tab under "Keyboard" in System Preferences.

All discs contain exactly the same OS. There is no difference if installing a MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, iMac or Mac Mini. You just need to tweak your system preferences until your happy. Just a matter of checking or unchecking boxes.

That was the fix. Had to 'uncheck' the shortcuts for F9 through F12. Thanks.
