Does daisy chaining reduce (at all or significantly) effectiveness? Specifically, can I daisy chain 5 or 6 drives together successfully when using them in FCP7?

It all depends on the nature of the footage.

Prores? Nope. Won't happen with firewire and ONE connection, to say nothing of more than that.

Standard-def DV video? It's do-able. I wouldn't push it past 3 connections, and I wouldn't count on having more than a couple-three streams of video.

"Prores? Nope. Won't happen with firewire and ONE connection,"

well it really does depend on the type of media
i tend to work with ProResLT, 1080 or 720p
FW800 handles that with no problems at all

the last big documentary i worked on we had 5 FW drives daisy chained
media was HDV, so relatively low throughput.

i havent noticed more drives making for significantly slower drives.
