WAV out of sync with 30fps footage
on Jan 28, 2014 at 2:22:14 pm

Hi

I filmed footage at 30fps on my 5D Mark 3 and recorded the audio on radio mics at 48khz, Now I am trying to sync and it starts off ok and then starts to lose sync?

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Gavin

Is it 30 fps, or 29.97 fps? There's a big difference.

Hi Dave

It was shot on a 7D and said 30fps but am unsure if that really is 29.97?

I have set up FInal Cut to match the settings of the clip though (as in I dragged one into the timeline and let Final Cut ask me if I wanted to change the settings of sequence to match clip to which I said yes)

Check the frame rates for the two different cameras in the FCP Browser: highlight a clip and find it.

Oh wait - by saying two cameras did you mean the WAV audio file and the camera?

I confused threads. So the footage is at 29.97. Where did the wav file come from? An external recorder that assigned an incorrect frame rate to it?

You may be able to solve the problem by converting it in QT Pro to an AIFF.

The WAV was from a Lapel mic I used - when would a frame rate have been set to the audio then - there is no option to set a frame rate with the mic?

Unless you're using FCPX, make sure the video files from the camera are transcoded to ProRes before trying to edit with them. My guess is you haven't done this and the computer can't keep up with playing the video in real-time resulting in the loss of sync. I'm also guessing that Dave misinterpreted your post and assumed you shot using a double system set-up - sorry Dave. I'm assuming you recorded audio with a lapel mic plugged into the camera.

I reserve the right to be wrong.
