Converting C300 and F4 footage to Prores for FCP
on Jan 9, 2014 at 8:03:58 pm

Hello,
I am going to cut a short film for a mate.
He has shot material on a Sony F5 and a Sony C300.

I can't work out the best way to convert them to Prores so I can cut them in FCP 7.

The files on the F5 cards are MXF, XML, BIM. I am assuming I just need the MXF for the conversion?

Thankyou in advance for any help or advise on this.

Cheers,
Dan.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! Sorry to yell, but NO!!!!! Do NOT only copy the files you think you need. Back up THE ENTIRE CARD...FULL CARD STRUCTURE. Meaning make a new folder, name it a unique "Reel Number," and copy the full contents of the card into that folder. Or get ShotPut Pro that will do that for you, automatically, and verify that all the files have been copied. NEVER EVER EVER just copy the files you THINK you need. If you do that, you'll have huge issues trying to get it into the edit system.

While Avid might deal with MXF media natively, you can't just grab the MXF files and import them. There's a whole process for that involving AMA, and that requires the full structure. FCP does not deal with MXF natively, it requires you use LOG AND TRANSFER to bring that footage in. And if the file structure is messed up, then you need to shell out hundreds of dollars on software that will enable FCP to read MXF native files. EVEN FCX requires the full card structure. Adobe Premiere might not, but you never know what NLE this might be used with now, or in the future, so to be on the safe side, archive the full card, exactly as it is.

I CANNOT stress that enough.

PLUGIN:

Workflow:

Sony F5...That's a different story. That camera does not have a direct workflow for FCP 7, as FCP 7 was discontinued before anything was made for it. For that camera you need to either download third party MXF plugins (like I mentioned) like Calibrated MXF, or MXF4MAC. Or use another NLE like Premiere Pro or FCX to then export into a format (ProRes) that FCP 7 can work with.
