Editing with different frame rates
on Jan 6, 2014 at 2:27:21 pm

Hi there,

I'm editing a music video and I have two different frame rates to work with- 25FPS & 50FPS.

Most of the 50fps is just slow motion dancing which I'll cut away to, although theres a few lip syncs with the 50fps.

I'd like to set my edit to 25FPS, but how will the 50FPS footage work with that?

Thanks,

Kelly

Pick the shots you want to slow down. Duplicate them. Use Cinema Tools to CONFORM them to 25fps. Import into FCP. They'll be half-speed.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I've never used Cinema Tools before- if I transcode the 50FPS footage to 25, won't it lose its slow motion effect?

Thanks,

Kelly

Get your terminology correct. You will be CONFORMING, not TRANSCODING. Have you never shot something at a fast frame rate, then played it back at normal speed? By conforming 50 fps footage to 25fps, you're in essece doing the same thing.

And the reason for duplicating the footage before you use Cinema tools is this: you still have the original footage in case you make an error. Which can happen if you've never used a piece of software before.

I haven't conformed before, so thank you for clarifying that for me.

Is there an alternative software to Cinema Tools? Ours is having problems at the moment.

After Effects can conform imported footage in File>Interpret>Main... but you have to render it out from a comp at the desired frame rate.

Motion can probably do the same thing; don't know that for a fact.

Quick note, Cinema Tools only works on full frame media like ProRes. XDCam, h.264, ect will not work in Cinema Tools. If you must conform and transcode, Compressor can do this in one step.
