What codec should I use?
on Oct 25, 2013 at 8:54:03 am

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been answered before but I couldn't find a topic.

I have created a 10"clip using ONLY HQ photos.
I want to know which of these two codecs is used for the best quality export.
AJA Kona 10bitRGB OR Uncompressed 10bit 4:2:2?

I have tried to export the same clip with both codecs and I see a difference in whites, blacks and in general AJA Kona 10bitRGB seems to have higher contrast but closer to my original footage.

I know most will say that use the one that seems better but I would like to know what are the differences and which one is mainly used by the professionals.

Thank you.

First of all:

All Photos should be jpegs or tiffs 8bit, RGB color space, 72dpi.
I would do a ProRes 8bit 422 file.

cheers

Rainer

Thanks! ProRes also has a difference in colors (lighter)in comparison to the other 2 codecs and of course the original footage.

Well, the answer will be based on how will this be shown? Who are you delivering it to, and how will it be exhibited? Web? DVD? Broadcast TV? At a conference on a projector?

Hi Shane,

I must export it to a file (best quality possible), a digital beta for Broadcast to TV and a DVD.

[Yiannis Valkan] "I must export it to a file (best quality possible)"

For use how? Archival? And they didn't specify a codec? 10-bit uncompressed would be an option...but it's HUGE. Even bigger, but this would be the absolute best...ANIMATION. But the file size is even bigger than Uncompressed.

[Yiannis Valkan] "a digital beta for Broadcast to TV"

Well then whatever you choose will be compressed to SD. But this is handled by a capture card...so the codec to choose there is one that FCP can play back and lay out to tape. DVD? It'll get so compressed that any subtle difference you see will be wiped out.

Thank you very much,
but isn't there an option to "rule them all"?
An option that will be kept in archive, to be used in FCP and of course the same file to import in a DVD encoder suite like CCE ot TC.
Uncompressed 10bit will do it, right?

What is the main difference between Uncompressed 10 bit and AJA Kona 10bit?

[Yiannis Valkan] "but isn't there an option to "rule them all"?"

Nope.

[Yiannis Valkan] "Uncompressed 10bit will do it, right?"

Sure...if you like large files. Personally I'd use ProRes, but that's me.

[Yiannis Valkan] "What is the main difference between Uncompressed 10 bit and AJA Kona 10bit?"

The Kona one is what is used if you capture from a Kona card. I'd not use that one.
