High quality transfer - Hi8 to FCP7 - Digital8 vs. Canpopus
on Sep 24, 2013 at 5:35:09 pm

Hi - I need to transfer about 10 hours of Hi8 footage for a documentary that will be projected theatrically. There seems to be two ways to go about transferring Hi8 footage to FCP7 on a MacBook Pro:

(1) Hi8 camcorder or deck connected via S-Video to a Canopus 300
(2) Digital8 camcorder and transfer the Hi8 tapes via Firewire

Does anyone know how the A/D converter in a Digital8 camcorder compares to the Canopus A/D converter (with S-video from the Hi8 camcorder or deck)?

A Digital8 camcorder may be the cheapest way to go... but I do not want to sacrifice quality!

Thanks in advance!
Dan

Digital 8 straight to Firewire capture as DV is your best bet. The other option takes the COMPOSITE signal and converts that...Composite is the lowest quality signal there is.

Hey, Shane...thank you for the info! Glad to hear the Digital8 is the best option. Looks like I can purchase a DCR-TRV350 Camcorder for about $150 from ebay. I'll also spring for a Digital8 Head Cleaning cassette.

Daniel

Keep in mind quality will only be as good as the original. Never better.
