Trouble installing FCS3 onto Mountain Lion
on Jul 21, 2013 at 7:57:03 pm

My son just bought a new MacBook Pro 2.3gHz with mountain lion 10.8.4 installed. He needed FCP7 and found the least expensive route was fcs3. When we attempt to install it, we get the error "the installation failed. the installer could not install the software. the installer could not install the software because there was no software found to install". I have read people saying that FCS will and and some say will not work with mountain lion.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It works. Are you installing from official FCS discs? Is it possible that you accidentally purchased a boot leg copy? Or are you installing from disc images that are saved to an external drive? FCPX won't do?

It is the full academic version. Not sure that has anything to do with it. My son said fcp7 is better control than fcpx. I am not a video guy so do not know. Could it be that the person we purchased it from never uninstalled it or would that have nothing to do with it?

Just making sure you didn't get ripped off. I haven't seen the "because there is no software to install" warning before. I remember people having problems in the past (like Snow Leopard days) who were able to install each FCS app one at a time, but not all at once. Maybe give that a try. I keep a Disc image of each install disc saved on a hard drive. Installation time goes from 4 hours down to 40 minutes or less depending on content chosen to install.

If the previous owner didn't uninstall, you would get a warning if you tried to open FCP while the previous owner had it running as well, and you are both connected to the Internet.

Your son is aware that the Academic version is only for learning the program, and it is not legal to be used for "work"? I'd advise that he look closer at FCPX, FCP7 doesn't have a terribly good grasp on life or the future. Not to say FCP7 doesn't work or isn't a good program, its just, dead. FCPX is actually very good, despite its poorly received release.

I am hoping I did not get ripped off as well. I attempted to install one module at a time and received the same error. My son is going into his freshman year of college and will be using it for educational purposes only. He had checked with the college and they are using FCP7 and that is one reason he wanted it. He also had used it extensively in his high school tv classes.
Are there any tricks to install programs that do not want to install? Like a force install? or starting the computer is a "safe" mode. perhaps there is a software installed that is not allowing FCS3 to be installed?

I copied the log. Maybe this can lend some information as to whether the computer or installer are not working properly:

Just a shot in the dark. How many physical disks do you have? Are they the Apple originals? Are you sure that this is FCP Studio3 you are trying to install and not FCP3, the older, non-studio version? I don't think FCP3 will run on an Intel based machine. Just a thought...

There are 7 disks including the install and content disks and are all original apple. I did verify that it is final cut studio 3. I think I am going to bring it into the apple store and see if some of the techs there could determine the issue. Not sure they will look at it being it is an older program.
