How do you make 59.94 footage work on a 23.98 timeline without being jerky?
on Jul 21, 2013 at 8:28:42 am

On my GH2 the 720p mode allows FAR more recording time than the 1080p mode. However, the 720p mode records in 59.94 and the 1080p mode records in 23.98.

Is there a way to convert this 59.94 footage to 23.98 so it will have the "film look" and not the "soap opera look"? I tried Cinema Tools but it just turns it into a slo mo clip. When I tried dropping the clip as-is into the timeline it is very jerky. It sounds like Premiere, FCPX, etc. can do this. Can FCP7 do it?

Thanks for the help!

Not really. I mean, 59.94 works better in a 23.98 sequence than 29.97 footage does, but it wasn't designed for the "film look" of converting to 24p. There's no way to shoot 29.97 with pulldown...meaning shoot 24p with the intention of it looking like 23.98...and being able to remove the frames smoothly and have it be 23.98.

There are several cameras that shoot 720p23.98...or 720p24 that is in a 59.94 stream...and looks filmic. But straight 720p 59.94...that's meant to look hyper real. FCP 7 does a decent job of making it mix with 23.98 footage and not look too off. But it still doesn't look exactly right.

If you want the film look..shoot 23.98. And deal with the shorter record times.
