Playback problems with FCP export white flash frames
on Jun 11, 2013 at 8:44:09 pm

Hello,

I'm having a problem I've never experienced before. Exporting a project and the file then plays back (in both QT and VLC) with occasionaly white flash frames between clips (or shots). Not between every shot.

When I put that file back into FCP to look at it, the flash frames have miraculously disappeared. What???

My settings are DV NTSC 48kHz and I've tried various export encodes, from DV NTSC to current settings to H264. All have the same problem

I'm tearing my hair out with this. Any thoughts?

Thanks so much in advance.

What is the codec of the footage you are editing?

Why are you taking this wonderful ProRes 422 720x486 footage, and putting it into at DV timeline? DV is the lowest quality format FCP deals with. You are degrading your footage!

Make a new sequence. Cut a clip into that sequence and click YES when it asks to make the sequence settings match the clip settings. Then remove the clip

Copy and paste the clips from the horrid, bad, evil DV sequence, and paste into the nice, pristine, lovely ProRes sequence. You might need to remove some DISTORT from the clips...I don't know. But then try.

I didn't put it into a DV timeline. When I began work, I imported into a fresh project and did as you say, clicked YES when it asked to make the sequence settings match the clip settings.

I'm very confused but don't think I have a DV sequence... That was simply one of the exports I tried when I started getting these flashes. The footage was transferred from 16mm film and the editing timebase is 29.97...

Sorry, your original post said "My settings are DV NTSC 48kHz and I've tried various export encodes" I assumed you meant your sequence settings were DV, and you were trying to export as that, and others.

If you were only using QTX, I'd say it's that. But VLC too? But it's fine when you bring it back into FCP. Try playback on another computer. Does it happen there?

Here are my sequence settings:
Pixel Aspect Ratio is indeed NTSC
The Compressor QT Video Settings are ProRes 422

I tried play back on another computer. Same problem. If you want to see what it looks like, it's here:

Wow...and they seem interlaced. Guessing you are working at 29.97 interlaced...because pulldown from 24 to 30 works best on an interlaced sequence. Issue is, the web HATES interlaced. Try switching the FIELD ORDER to NONE in the sequence settings.

I set the field to none. Still that ugly flash. Aargh. What's crazy is that the flashes are invisible within FCP. The export has them, whether playing back on Vimeo, in QT or VLC. But if I take that same exported file and put it in a sequence in FCP, the problem is gone. I know I'm repeating myself from my original post. But just in case that triggers something, now that you've seen it...
