How can I change font attributes in multiple Outline Text clips?
on May 23, 2013 at 6:30:49 pm

I have a 50-minute movie with about 950 subtitles, each of which is an Outline Text clip. I'd like to enlarge the font on all of them.

I found a great tool at
http://www.michaelcinquin.com/tools/subtitles/subtitles_formatting
which uses one clip as a template and copies that clip's characteristics to all the other clips. You export an XML, it operates on that XML and produces a new one, you re-import that and voila.

My problem with this is that FCP's XML export is losing the line breaks in my Outline Texts (they're just showing up as spaces).

Can anyone suggest either
a way to get FCP XML export to respect my line breaks
or
an alternative way to change the font attributes of 950 clips?

i think this is a bug in earlier versions of FCP 7.
maybe you should upgrade to the last version?

Yes Nick, thank you very much.

Last night on a midnight dreary
while I pondered weak and weary
over many a quaint and curious message-board posting etc
I found a reference to this exact problem being cured by the 7.0.3 update.

It turns out that because I renamed FCP to FCP 7.0.2 (since I also have and sometimes run 5.1.4 for compatibility with certain ancient machines), the Apple software updater no longer saw it as FCP, and never told me about the update. I renamed it, the updater updated it, and the linebreaks returned to my XMLs as the birds sang happily in the dawn.

Back to work now.
