FCP won't recognize Avid DNxHD codec
on May 22, 2013 at 6:51:48 pm

I have a 1080p24 video rendered out with the Avid DNxHD codec on a PC using Premiere. When I bring it over onto my Mac workstation that has FCP 6.0.6 and drag it onto a timeline the preview pane is just red with "Codec could not be opened".

I've successfully installed the Avid codecs and restarted the system so I'm not sure why it still won't load the file properly. The Avid codecs don't show up in the FCP presets but I've checked that all the files are in /Library/QuickTime. Any help please?

Is the file wrapped as a Quicktime movie or MXF?

If Quicktime, does it open and play in QT7?

It's in an mov wrapper. Opening it in QT throws up the error saying that an additional component is needed so apparently QT doesn't recognize the codecs either.

I'm guessing that the either the Avid Codec components you downloaded are not installed in the right place (if QT can't open it) or you downloaded the wrong components.

Which codec pack did you download from Avid? I'm not positive that the newest codec pack will work in FCP 6.X. You may need to get the one built around that time?

The Avid Codec components should be installed in [your_system_drive]/Library/Quicktime

In there you should also see codecs like ProRes, DVCPROHD, Apple Intermediate Codec, etc.

Yep, all the component files are in that folder. I downloaded the 2.3.7 LE package right from Avid's site here: http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Download/en423319.
Everything installed fine and it didn't say there were any compatibility errors. Suppose I'll try installing an older version like 2.3.4.

[Chad Brunswick] "Suppose I'll try installing an older version like 2.3.4."

That'd be my next step.

Nope, no luck. I even tried uninstalling and deleting the codec files before I installed the older version. Maybe if I could upgrade QuickTime or something, but of course you can't upgrade or install anything on a Mac unless you keep up with the current version of OSX.

Any other ideas? Thanks for helping.

[Chad Brunswick] "Any other ideas? "

I would probably run a reset disk permissions and verify/scan the drive....make sure it's all good there. I would also verify from wherever you got the file that is indeed a DNxHD Quicktime. They could export it out as a different format instead for you to load it onto your system.

After that I'd guess I'd have to go more nuclear and reformat the drive and reinstall from scratch.

For long term consideration.....not sure what OS you're on, but FCP 6 is now over 6 years old (released in 2007). It's probably time to consider moving up to something more current as well. Especially if you have to start dealing with more modern codecs.

Was this issue resoloved. I'm having a similar issue. Working with an FCP editor who says she cannot run my DNxHD files. Can anyone say which versions of MAC OS and FCP will work with the Avid DNxHD codec 2.3.7 ?
