Creating a HD DVD using type 5 DVD.
on Apr 24, 2013 at 8:17:45 pm

I'm attempting to burn an HD DVD in DVD Studio Pro 4 using Ken Stones tutorial. I used Compressor to make my H.264 master (multi-pass, 1920x1080). I set DVD Studio Pro to HD DVD. But when I try to drop my H.264 master into the template, I get an error reading saying the format is not supported.

Has anyone successfully done this?

There are HD DVD presets in Compressor...use those.

And you know that ONLY Macs and Toshiba HD DVD players will play these back, right? HD DVD is a dead format...lost to BluRay.

You can make BluRay disks with regular DVDs and the DVD burner. You just need to use the SHARE option to do that. And I think you are limited to a running time of 10-15 min.

Make BluRay? You use the SHARE option directly from FCP. BluRay is an option.

It's not ideal, (share function off the timeline) but I'm grateful for it all the same: if you make PSA's and commercials or news clip VNR packages, that's a long enough duration to distribute a high def product via the BluRay instead of an FTP or more expensive tape process. And the BD makes a great shelf archive.

It's not really a bluray. It's an AVCHD at about 1/3rd the bit rate of regular bluray. But they look great. If you just make a file you can take it over to toast and make basic menus.
