Converting audio files
on Apr 22, 2013 at 5:48:40 pm

I have some audio in a production that was recorded at 44.1 KHz rather than 48.0 KHz. I'd like to convert it to 48.0 KHz before exporting to Pro Tools.

What might be the preferred method to do the conversion? If I merely convert the original files that are on the hard drive, maintaining the file name, will that do the trick? Or do I need to convert the files, create new files and replace the 44.1 KHz files on the FCP Timeline with the new 48.0 KHz files.

Renaming the files is a personal preference. Just understand that once they're converted, they are now the original files of the project. So if you rely on file names for billing purposes, you might want to keep them.

If you are converting a ton of files, I'll put in a good word for Digital Heaven's "Loader." It sits on the edge of the FCP UI -- drag and drop audio files onto it, and it will convert and copy them to your project directory. Well worth the $29.99 I paid years ago.
