FCP 7.0 XDCAM MXF Rejected By Network
on Apr 12, 2013 at 9:23:01 am

Hi Guys, a minor crisis on hand. I have just delivered a Master for an animated feature to the network.

Delivery Settings Required : 1920x1080 50i XDCAM Apple Pro Res 422 MXF. 25FPS.

We rendered out a QT from our 24FPS timeline converted to XDCAM and then conformed to 25FPS.

The network rejected the master and sent us a list of errors that they obtained having run the file through BATON.

The errors are namely :

The bit rate as 49.99MBPS (weird as i remember we selected the CBR 1920x1080i 50MBPS option)

The structure of the GOP was found M2 N8 but should be M3 N12

All other errors were Out of Gamut Pixels & Block Errors. (20 in all)

I was wondering if there were any ideas or suggestions as to how i could eliminate these errors and deliver an acceptable master.

If you guys need any more information i would be happy to provide it.

We are using FCP 7

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

[gaurav jain] "Delivery Settings Required : 1920x1080 50i XDCAM Apple Pro Res 422 MXF. 25FPS. "
That's not very clear to me.
"Prores MXF" what means?
Prores is QT.
There is not "Prores MXF"

[gaurav jain] "We rendered out a QT from our 24FPS timeline converted to XDCAM and then conformed to 25FPS. "
That sounds weird too.
Being a GOP format, XDCAM can't be Conformed.

The only way I know that FC can deliver MXF, is through the "Export XDCAM" option.

The tech specs are as follows.

"Only MXF files encoded in IMX (SD/625) or XDCAM HD 422 (HD/1080) will be accepted. File must have AFD codes (based on ETSI TS 101 154 V1.7.1 Annex B, ATSC A/53 Part 4 and SMPTE 2016-1-2007) ; bit rate at 50 Mbps; recording frame rate at 50i. Files should be housed in iVDR cartridge."

The film we made was meant for cinema broadcast and at 24 FPS. We rendered a QuickTime and then through the exporter created an XDCAM file wrapped in MXF.

I suppose i might have gotten the order wrong about conforming but the video was conformed from 24fps to 25fps.

does any of this help at all in understanding what may have gone wrong?

thanks for responding.

I will go with those questions, but let me know first;
Which format is the 24fps master?

Hi. Apple Pro Res 422 is what we have worked with, the 24FPS was rendered using the same.

OK. that makes sense.
Prores can be conformed, XDCAM can not be conformed.

[gaurav jain] "I suppose i might have gotten the order wrong about conforming but the video was conformed from 24fps to 25fps. "
No problem about the conforming.
That will make that the picture plays at 25fps instead of 24fps (4% faster).
The picture will play at 25fps, but the audio won't be anymore 48Khz, 49,92Khz.

However I don't see the reason why, if you drop your conformed master on a XDCAM-HD422/25fps (and render the sequence), your export has those problems.

You may try another option that would be a retiming/conversion in Compressor.
Then using FC just for the re-wrapping as MXF.
