Troubles from FC to MPEGStreamclip with HD
on Mar 24, 2013 at 5:02:27 pm

Hello,

I've shot a video with the new Canon HF G25 in format MTS 1920 × 1080 25fps, converted it using ClipWrap into .mov format as follow

H.264, 1440 x 1080 (1920 x 1080), Millions
24-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
Normal Size: 1920 x 1080 pixels
Current Size: 1920 x 1080 pixels (Actual)

I've put this into FC in a new sequence format as follow

Compressor: H.264
Pixel aspect: HD 1440 x 1080
Frame Size: 1440 x 1080
25fps

When I export it as .mov it looks fine, great quality. When I compress it using MPEGStreamclip into mp4 quality is not as good. I've incorporated some slides that don't look as sharp as in the mov before mp4 compression and some lines look jerky.

Settings in MPEGStreamclip are

Compression: H.264
Size: 1920x1080 unscaled
No interlace/deinterlace selected

Any clues why the mov out of FC looks great and the mp4 from streamclip looks jerky?

Thank you very much for any help
Paolo

When you export from FCP you are just exporting as is without compression, no quality loss.
When you export from streamclip you are compressing into a smaller file, with quality loss.
Check your data rate when exporting from streamclip, this will control the quality/file size of your compressed file.
Fyi- not a good idea to edit with h264 files in FCP. Always convert your footage from that camera to ProRes LT before editing in FCP.

Your problems started when you converted to H.264 and tried to edit that in FCP. FCP doesn't like it, and any host of issues will crop up. Gotta convert to ProRes before editing.

Yes I've read about this issue and forgot on the rush of production time. I've tried to export to mp4 from QT instead of mpegstreamclip and the quality is much better, I'll give it a go this way.

Thanks a lot guys!
