H264 to SD-DVD generational loss
on Mar 21, 2013 at 8:20:42 pm

Hi all,

So yesterday I was presented with a 1280x720 H264 file which I was asked to convert to a standard def DVD. The video looks clean without any noticeable artifacts. I created the DVD and the picture looks fine other than the usual SD downconversion mpeg2 issues - pixilation in the red channels, pixilation around some of my text, reduced resolution, etc...

My question is, if I had pushed harder to get a proRes 1920x1080 file and use that to create a DVD instead of my H264, would the gain in quality have been at all noticeable?

Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Best,
George T.

If the sequence they are editing in was ProRes...yeah, it'd be better. One level of compression instead of two. But not by a lot...
