Creating text effect in fcp
on Mar 6, 2013 at 8:49:17 pm

Hi there,

I have been trying to find out how to create this effect in FCP or in motion, but I cant even seem to articulate it enough to search for it.

Basically, if you watch this at 5 seconds in the text effect I am looking for begins.

Basically it is pinning the text to move with something in the shot.

I have tried it with keyframes in fcp but it looks jerky and awful and I wondered if there was a simpler way to do this in motion or in fcp.

any help would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

It's called TEXT TRACKING, and is something you'd do in After Effects.

Yes, you can do this in Motion by first applying a tracker to the footage, then any graphic you put in Apple Motion lock to the motion. Same as AE can do, but it may be a little simpler in Motion.

Look for Stephen Smith's tutorials on the COW tutorials page because I believe he shows how to do this there. Or ask Stephen straight-up in the Motion forum, where he's like the G%D#$ Bat Man in terms of fast help when you need it. Great guy, good teacher.

Mark,
Thanks for the kind words.

Yes, this is easy to do in Motion 4. I would recommend that you check out this tutorial: http://www.digitaljuice.com/djtv/detail.aspx?sid=470&sortby=&page=1&rpid=0&...

This is how it was done:
-Text layer was added above the layer with the movie.
-Match Move behavior added to text layer
-Hit F2 to open Behaviors tab
-Make sure Type = Transformation
-Move the anchor point to the area you want to track
-Select the Scale Adjust button so Position and Scale are enabled
-You will get a new option below Anchor called “Rotation-Scale.”
-Click on the Analyze button and best of luck.
