Export subtitles to tiff from a FCP sequence
on Mar 6, 2013 at 3:46:44 am

Hello to all!
I need to export a continuos show from subtitles (only) to tiff with alpha channel to add in other soft.
I can do it normal with the section that has subtitles, but in the areas without subtitles, the FCP renders a black solid.
Can anyone help me?
thanks!
Julian

Hi Julian,
Avoid TIFF. They have some export options that may cause problems on FC.
Better export PNG. Make sure they are RGB and not CMYK.

are you exporting your entire subtitles track as a TIFF image sequence?

would it not be possible to just export each subtitle as a single TIFF file,
and provide an EDL of the track?

however,
if you need to proceed the way you are going, a possible solution wield be to put a BLANK title generator in all the gaps between your subs.

here's how to do it quick
open the text generator (control X)
with no in/outs in your timeline, copy/ paste, or OPTION DRAG, the duration ftom the canvas to the Text
it's now as long as you show.

edit it into your show to an empty track beneath the subs
might be wise to name it something appropriate at this stage

select all the subs,
SHIFT drag them down one track, eating into the blank text generator.

now you have one continuos track of text, alternating between text and blank,
which might export the way you need

test a smal section first, of course.

Export without rendering your timeline first. Export to a format that supports an alpha channel.

Hello!
Thanks a lot It works!
The edl is a option maybe, but its too much work export every single text, I think.

I don't know why the FCP works like that...

You are the best!!!
best regards!

"its too much work export every single text, I think."

select all the texts in the timeline,
copy into a new bin,
batch export as TIFFs

you should talk to the people you are delivering to, as well.

Hi Nick!
I think I can't do that because the text clips has the same name ("outline text") and when I try to export them the fcp tells that is another clip with the same name,
by the other hand the edl will not work because all the clips has the same name...

thanks for all your help!!!

best regards!

ah, yes, that is correct, sorry for the bum steer
i wish batch export was a bit cleverer like that.

i try to name my text generators after what the text is,
but i have a macro to help with that.

Thanks!
How do you work with macro? is some tutorial around the web?

another question can you send to after effects the track with subtitles? I can't with the plugin PI_FC2AE.jsxbin
send it with a empty track
thanks for your help!

best regards

i use the Macro App QuickKeys.
there are others,
AUtomator (built into your mac) might be an option, i don't know.

you program a series of shortcuts and other instructions, and trigger them off.

in this case it's a very simple Macro

i start with the first title double clicked into the viewer.
with the controls tab active

then the macros runs like this:

Tab (moves to text entry area)
Apple C (copy text)
Shift Apple [ (move to video tab of viewer)
Apple 9 (open item properties)
Apple V (paste text to generator name)
Enter
Pause (pauses are important in programming the macros)
Down Arrow (jumps Viewer window to next title)
Shift Apple } (move to Controles tab in viewer)

and you are back at the start.
you can program this to repeat.

of course you way STILL have subtitles with the same name, as there could be subs with the same words
"No" or "Yes" spring to mind

"another question can you send to after effects the track with subtitles?

sorry, i don't really know after effects,
but with what i first suggested you would not have an empty track,
you would have a track completely made up of titles generators, but half of them would be blank.
