Corrupted files on FAT32 drive
on Jan 31, 2013 at 7:49:19 pm

A client was recording SD from camera to WireCast .Mov on Mac, saving the files directly to his client's external PC drive. He had never heard of FAT32, but Check Info shows the drive is.

He wants to know how to restore the unplayable portion of each recording saved to FAT32. He is aware that only the first 4GB of each clip is stored on the drive, the rest is gone forever.

IS it possible to resurrect the bits still on the FAT32 drive?

Does anyone have a recipe they can post?

Hi George,
FAT-32 is a mac/Pc compatible format.
It shouldn't be problem recording on that. SDHC and Compact Flash cameras are formated this way.
The problem might be because the the stream data rate could be to high for the USB connexion, I guess, he was using.
Not sure if that could be the issue, but if would need to record a live stream with a Mac I would try to do it on a Mac formatted computer and with a connexion more reliable than USB2.

I would have given directions to record this properly if they asked in advance. All they have now is 10 broken 4GB .mov files that will not play in QT, WMP, VLC, FCP or Vegas.

So, for now the question is - Is it possible to restore/fix/repair these corrupted .mov fragments of their full day video shoot?

They're hosed.
They tried to save a few bucks, and now the chickens have come home to roost.

I'm guessing you are correct. Just hoping someone on this forum knows software or a secret handshake that can realign the broken GOPs to give some bit of playable, editable footage.

Even if that works, they are probably still hosed. Who wants a few grabs out of a full day of presentations? But, hey, I said I would ask.
