ProRes Files Won't Play

I just converted a ton of Apple HDV 1080i60 files to ProRes 422. When I try to play them in FCP, they play for about two seconds and then stop.

I convert to ProRes 422 all the time - what have I done wrong?

I tried switching to unlimited RT and lowering the playback quality.

What kind of drive are these files on, and how fast is the drive's connection?

They're on a 2TB drive with a FW connection.

Plain old firewire won't cut it for playback. You'll need firewire 800 at least.

[Lynette Gilbert] "I convert to ProRes 422 all the time - what have I done wrong?"

Are there any differences between the basic attributes of the HDV and ProRes files?

There should be a few key differences, though: FCP prefers that ProRes files conform to its orthodox attributes -- square pixels, 1920x1080, 23.98 or 29.97 fps, and so on.

ProRes also requires about 10x the basic bit transfer rate as it is a much denser codec -- although processing is lighter than the CPU-intensive Long-GOP of HDV.

Seems like too basic a question, but --- does your sequence match the codec?

Everything seems correct, nothing stands out to me. And yes, the sequence settings match the codec. :-)

Are you using the same exact converter you always use?
If you copy some to the media to your local drive, make new project, will it run?
What is different about these files you converted than the other ones you say always work?

Just a few questions I thought of.

Yes, I'm doing nothing different.

I did look more closely at the files - some of them are ridiculously large (like 50GB after converting). Perhaps the drive is having issues because they're so big? I'm copying them to a different drive to see if it makes a difference (and also because I'm running out of room - I have about 30 of these files to convert, and I need them all in the same place).

Well, it seems to be working now. Weird - I've never had this problem before. All I did was copy them onto a different drive, but one that didn't have a ton of stuff on it.
