changing audio bit depth
on Jan 28, 2013 at 8:39:47 pm

Howdy,

I have a project with a massive amount of clips. Most have been captured at 24bits, and some at 16.

When these are mixed in a timeline, the audio is a little out of sync and I believe this is the reason.

Does anyone know if it's possible for me to change the bit depth within FCP or anywhere else without changing the video information in said clip?

If it was just a few clips I would recapture, but we're talking a lot of clips.

Thanks!
Mike

There shouldn't be any problem with 24-bit clips in FCP. I think the drifting is from other causes.

But without additional information on your workflow, nobody can tell......

Thanks for your reply,

These clips are actually finished commercials for historical reel. Most of the spots are

Mac 10.6.8
2.2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
16GB Memory

FCP 7.0.3

The source clips are standard def NTSC CCIR601
Uncompressed 10bit 4 2 2
720x486 29.97
48kz
and then some are 16bit and some are 24bit

There also are some Pro Res 422HQ mixed in there as well, though not too much.

SEQUENCE SETTINGS

720x486 CCIR 601 NTSC (40:27)
PAR 720x480 DV
Field Dominance Lower(Even)
Editing Timebase 29.97
Compressor Apple ProRes 422HQ
Audio Rate 48
Audio Depth 16
Config Stereo Downmix

You're right in my assumption that it was the bit depths, but I guess it could be something else as well.

I have a KONA capture card and I'm judging sync on my computer monitors, not my video monitor.

Do you need any other info?

I'm sure you're aware that a video monitor is a far better method of judging your clips. Why use a computer monitor when you don't have to?

Judging sync? Are you saying that that the viewers in FCP aren't accurate?

Trust the video monitor fed by your Kona card.
