DV export from qt7 is incorrect size?
on Jan 20, 2013 at 1:00:15 am

I'm being asked to deliver some video in dv25, don't have any previous experience with this codec as 90% of my work is for the web so did a bit of googling and found that DV, DVCam, DVCPro and Digital 8 are ALL DV25 formats... So I'm not sure which to use, I'll contact them and ask for specifics

But for now, I tried exporting at DVCPRO 1024x576, 25 fps using quicktime pro 7 (source is in pro res is 1920 x 1080 ) following this tutorial which refers to "dv25" as "dvcpro ntsc"

http://www.tunecore.com/images/video/dv25_tutorial.pdf

However for some reason, the exported video is smaller ?

Also - if i try to export using "dv stream" in compressor, the size option is greyed out and forced at a smaller size - http://i.imgur.com/ZA2N8C1.png

Can anyone point me in the right direction here?

Cheers

Pal DV is 720x576.
The only problem is that QT do not display other than Squared pixels and the picture looks distorted.
So if the picture is to be displayed on computers, is OK that you make 1024x576, but if you have been asked standard DV, leave it at 720x576.
The picture will be properly displayed when interpreted as PAL DV Anamorphic.

Thanks, I'm not sure whether they want PAL or NTSC (I'll ask), is NTSC also default to 720x576?

The project is being played on some sort of projector, what confuses me given your info though is that they asked for

"dv25 at 1024x576"

Is this an impossibility?

If you are working at 25fps you are in PAL lands.
NTSC is 720x480 (DV formats), or 720x486.

Ok thats what I thought, I just tried exporting the 1920x1080 pro res using qtpro 7

Settings :

DVCPRO - PAL
frame rate : 25
Scan mode : Progressive
Aspect : 16x9
Size: 1024 x 576

and it came out at 1024 x 576 :)

Thanks man, I have to say some of the colors are a bit off on logos etc, but I guess thats just the DV compression

Give them a DV-Pal QT. They will handle the rest. The switcher they are using will rescale it for the projectors.

[sean miller] "Settings :

and it came out at 1024 x 576 :)"

Sure, that will look perfect on your computer, but is not standard DV.
If the movie will be reedited with other DV stuff, broadcasted or used for a DVD, it wont pass.
AND DON"T USE DVCPRO, that's a completely different codec.
Use Apple DV PAL.

Ok I think thats pretty much what I sent them on the first go around. They came back specifically asking for 1024x576 anamorphic in dv25

I just exported the pro res again as DV PAL, 1024 x 576, progressive

These are the results when I 'get info' in qt : http://i.imgur.com/ZbHoTzo.png

Whilst it says 1024 x 576 (actual) in the format area it says 720x576 and (1023x576).... really confused here.

Actual is the size that is being shown. But the encoded pixels are 720x 576. DV is a fixed codec (s). 720x480 or 720x576. Anything else and you'll get errors or problems. When you encoded your 16x9 it squeezed it horizontally into 720x576. The computer sees that it has an anamorphic tag and displays it correctly at 1024x576.

Ah ok thanks that makes sense.

Given that they've asked for 1024x576 - to be played on a projector. Is it more likely that what they actually want is 720x576?

I'm assuming a projector won't see the anamorphic tag the computer sees and display the video with dodgy looking proportions.

Thanks for the help, much appreciated

Yeah thats what had me confused as I originally sent a Pal DV and they sent back saying "note we require 1024x576 in dv25"....

Are you suggesting i should just send over the original size pro res source (1920 x 1080) converted to pal dv without resizing.

Or send it in 720x576 pal dv?

Or could they possibly mean HDV format?

Don't worry about what that window say.
720x576 and 1024x576 is the same frame but made out of different pixels, the first PAL-Anamorphic, the second Squared. Any projector should be able to display both without problem.
Anyway, if they asked you 1024x576, do that.
Use QT and export 1024x576.

I used QT, exported PAL DV - 1024 x 576. Progressive.

They are mentioning that playback on their PC they get the wrong aspect ratio : http://i.imgur.com/JNmMsOE.png

Whereas on mac its fine: http://i.imgur.com/iVJCYsd.png

Its clear to me that whats happening is on mac the computer sees the anamorphic tag and displays the video at the correct 1024 x 576 whereas on PC its not & displaying it at 720 x 576, which messes up all the proportions of the video.

Just found out its not a projector they use but a giant LED screen.

Their PC"s are really old so that might be the issue, my concern is that will it play back ok (seeing the anamorphic tag) on the giant LED as it does on the mac... and not as it does on the PC?
