Movie compressing in 4:3 instead of 16:9 in FCP 6
on Dec 19, 2012 at 3:33:17 am

I shot footage with my Cannon HV-30. The sequence settings are Frame Size 1440x1080, aspect ratio HD(1440x1080)(16:9) and pixel aspect ratio HD(1440x1080). The QuickTime Video settings for compressor are HDV1080i60. However, when I compress it into H.264 using 100% of the original, I end up with a 4:3 movie, except for the YouTube version (http://youtu.be/VXAzs9caaZY) which for some very confusing reason is in 16:9. Do you guys have any advice on how to fix this?

Thank you, thank you as always!

Alex

Hi Alexandra.
QT do not understand other than Square pixels.
Export your movie with 1920x1080 Square Pixels.

Thanks, Rafael. Do I leave everything else as is and only change the pixel rate in the inspector?

Make a custom preset in Compressor in the dimensions that you want it to be.

[Alexandra Hidalgo] " Do I leave everything else as is and only change the pixel rate in the inspector?"
You need to change the dimension as well.
1440x1080 HD pixels is the equivalent to 1920x1080 Squared pixels.
That will shows up everywhere as proper 16x9.
In Compressor, set "Frame Control ON", and "Resize Filter: BEST".
It will take longer, but you will achieve better picture quality.

I was just wondering what those dimensions should be. I'm now running it with display bounds 1920x1080 as Rafael recommended. I'll report on how it goes...

HDTV has just two standard sizes:
- 1920 x1080 SQ Pixels
- 1280 x 720 SQ Pixels
Other sizes and pixels aspects (1440x1080, 1280x1080, 960x720,..) are acquisition formats (HDV, DVCProHD,..).

Hi Alexandra,
I have exactly the same question and I didn't understand exactly what Rafael recommended. I have FCP 6 and my footage and sequence is 1440x1080 (Canon XA10) Normally I do Export- QT Mov - Current settings. What should I set Current settings for. And when I bring it to Compressor how do I compress it to be good for youtube.
Thank you!
Oxana
