FCP EDiting Computer Update
on Dec 15, 2012 at 3:07:03 pm

Hi:

I am presently using FCP 6/0.6 on a MacPro with the following cofiguration:

               Processor                 065-8313  One 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xe
               Memory                    065-8429  8GB (4X2GB)
Graphics Card             065-7894  NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB

I am considering an upgrade to Non Retina 15''with an i7 2.7 , an SSD, and high res matte
display. I understand I can upgrade the RAM to 16 GB.

Several questions:

- Is FCP 6.0.6 going to present any problems running on the new machine?

- Will rendering be significantly faster on the new machine?

- Is it best to make the HD swap through Apple when I orfer the machine?

Any other useful tips or caveats will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dick

You won't be able to install FCP 6 onto the machine. The current OS, 10.8 Mountain Lion, doesn't have the Rosetta component that allows it to be installed. The App is Intel based, but the installer is PowerPC. And I'm not aware of any decent hacks that slow it to be installed. FCP 7 installs fine, but not FCP 6. It's too old. 6 years in software world is an eternity.

Hi - And thanks for the bad news :) And yes 6 years is a software eternity.

So . . . it seems like I can go to Apple and F C Studio 3 will be $1K. As I only use FCP & SoundtrackPro is there a legitimate way to buy these? Or any upgrade pricing for those of us with F C Studio 2 to 3?

I actually own FCP X but am so invested in my present workflow (and yes stubborn) that just thinking about making the switch makes me seasick.

If I assume I'll have to bite the 1K bullet will their be issues with running 7 on my present system (see above). Am I wrong to assume 7 and the new MacBook as configured above will give me a significant boost in rendering times?

I appreciate your advice as I know it saves me time/headaches and very
likely significant amounts of money. As I'm a one man shop working mostly for non-profits my budget is limited.

Thanks,

Dick

Hi Richard

I think outside spending your $1K Ebay is probably your only option. They pop up from time to time - might be worth a look. Obviously the usual caveats of buying 2nd hand apply but it is legit in terms of the licence.

best wishes

FCP isn't your only choice of NLE's. You can get AVID Media Composer 6.5 for $995 or Adobe CS6. Adobe's Creative Cloud is a very low cost solution.

Although I've never jumped into the Ebay pool it sounds like it might be worth a look see. Thanks

Agree it's not easy, but maybe not hopeless.
