FCP 7 export edges are cropped differently in quicktime vs VLC
on Dec 11, 2012 at 10:21:46 am

Hi there,

So I'm exporting an uncompressed MOV at 720p, square pixels, 29.97 from FCP 7. This movie has a white border of about 15px around all the edges (intentional).

When checking the output on Quicktime 10.2, the top and bottom borders seem only about 7 px, and the left and right edges even less, around 3 px. I thought this might be an export/file problem, but when I checked the same MOV in VLC 2.0.4 , the border was as designed and intact.

Any thoughts on why this is happening? Your help is appreciated!

That's not any export problem, but the way each player display the movies.
QT files have also a "property" (Cmd-J > Visual display), called "Aperture" .
Try the different options.

Gotcha, thanks Rafael.

After I noticed that my encoded mp4 was displayed fine on both players, and that quicktime's inspector showed the original resolution and the cropped resolution, I kept googling for a solution and noticed another post somewhere about quicktime doing this if the original was encoded as anamorphic. (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3822173?start=0&tstart=0)

I was under the assumption that uncompressed video wasn't encoded, and thus couldn't be anamorphic? Perhaps I'm just mixed up and need a better primer on video encoding.

Is not really about compression.
I work with HQ stuff and depending of the origin (camera) and applications that you prpcess the stuff with, some times your files comes with the aperture as "Production" "Clean" or not checked.
Right now on my Finder i have two versions of the same clip. Both are Prores, edt on FC. One has gone through Color, nit the other. Both are 1920x1080, but one display that size, the other 1866x1062.

BTW, I guess that in QTX you can't change the Aperture.
If you are working with FC.7 you should anyway install QT.7. no because the Aperture issue, but to avoid certain Gamma issues.
