Fastest way to convert for FCP usage...?
on Nov 21, 2012 at 3:52:20 pm

Sometimes I have a project that I need to dig into and don't have time to wait for everything to convert. Is there a way to convert faster with less quality? Does changing to a smaller size or less bitrate or anything else effect the output speed?

Looks like you are a good candidate for Adobe Premiere CS6. Whether you are transcoding to ProRes Proxy or ProRes, it still going to take time in FCP. It will not be faster. Adobe allows you to work with your footage natively and immediately.

The program that converts footage to ProRes the fastest is actually FCP X. Much faster than compressor and a million times faster than FCP 7. So even if you're editing in FCP 7, you could use FCP X just to transcode the footage to ProRes. Download the demo and give it a test.

i believe FCPX lets you edit the footage while it is transcoding in the background.
could be wrong, as i haven't used it yet.

I have been trying this workflow with the understanding that FCPX's 64 bit superiority would allow it to utilize my systems full resources (i5 with 20 gb of ram) as opposed to 7's limit at one core and 4 gb's yet i tested the theory with a 10 minute clip from a 5D and X was 3 TIMES SLOWER! I am really hoping that this is a UE or an incorrect pref, b/c i was really looking forward to using this workflow to speed up projects that i am forced to cut in 7.
