Is there a keyboard shortcut to add slug into the viewer?
on Nov 19, 2012 at 1:37:46 pm

I'm sure this question has come up here before but I don't see a thread containing it.

Avid makes it easy to load filler/clear the source monitor. In FCP the two clicks in the viewer drop down monitor to load slug seem a little clunky and I was wondering if there was a keyboard shortcut to do this?

Thx

Just go to the space you want to fill with the slug, and right mouse click: Click on "Fill with Slug"...And there you are.

Hi Sascha, unfortunately that's not the answer I'm looking for. There are times where I'd like to clear the monitor (i.e. I don't want the client to see footage there) or want to insert slug where there isn't a space. To reiterate, it'd be convenient to have a hotkey to do this. Sadly, I think the answer is that there isn't a keyboard shortcut.

You didn't state what version of FCP you are using, but you can pretty much assign any action to a keystroke in the keyboard layout.

Steve.

I'm still using 7.0.3. One of the first things I did was look in the keyboard layout. When I type in "slug" or "viewer" in the search box it doesn't give me the shortcut I'm looking for. Am I missing it?

yes there is a shortcut for slug,

it is Control W, BUT it only works if you have the viewer active.
if other windows are active it does other things.. like close them!

now the QUICKEST way to make the viewer active is to summon up the text generator,
Control X

why is that quickest? because that shortcut will take you to the viewer no matter what window you happen to be in.

so Control X, Control W is surefire fastest way to get some slug into the viewer.

Thanks Nick! That's what I'm looking for. When I read your post something clicked - I think I did know that back in the day (I've been on leave for a year and a half and now am having to rediscover some of the shortcuts).

Much appreciated.

no worries, Abigail.

i was having to do this a lot recently,
so i programmed a macro for it in QuicKeys,
i put a Command 3 on the end to take me back to the timeline.

cheers,
nick

I haven't heard of/used QuicKeys before. Definitely need to check it out. Thanks.
