Best way to capture from a DVD to FCP7

I captured video clips from a DVD disc to FCP7. The DVD was presented in HD size. When I started to edit it along with real HD video in FCP, the DVD clips have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. The picture looks stretched. I captured the DVD clips by going from a DVD player to a mini-dv camcorder to FCP.
What am I doing wrong? Is this even possible? Thank you.

Very frequently asked question on this forum. First do a search then reply back if you don't find the answer.

Are you SURE the DVD is HD? Unless it's BluRay...it's SD. And if you run it through a DV deck or camera...now it's SD...and in the DV format to boot. Letterboxing on DVDs is normal, and VERY common.

Steve:

Next time, rip the DVD using MPEG Streamclip. Its free, very fast, and works great, letting you get the footage into whatever codec you need for the edit.
