RED Scarlet footage shot 28.97 in 23.98 Timebase. Can't Sync Audio!
on Oct 14, 2012 at 9:41:24 pm

Greetings!

I am a student producer and last night I received a call from my editor saying she couldn't sync the audio from last night's shoot. Turns out that my DP did not realize that the frame rate and time base both needed to be adjusted so he accidentally shot 28.97 FPS in a 23.98 timebase.

Now we have no idea what to do! Considering dailies are due in class tomorrow, what would be the most efficient and non-destructive way of fixing this? Do we time remap the audio or something?

I'm at a loss, but so is my editor...hence why were are here :P.

Thank you!!!

29.97 in a 23.98 timebase? That doesn't make sense. 24p at 29.97... That makes since. 23.98 with pulldown added. But it doesn't make sense with RED as none of their cameras shoot with pulldown.

Do you mean they shot 30fps that was somehow flagged at 23.98 so it plays back slightly slower?

No.

28.97 in a 23.98 timebase.
Hence the annoyance.

I personally looked at both the Metadata of the clips (which says its at 23.98) and the Camera itself, in which the monitor said 28.97.

VERY Confused.

Sorry, I thought that was a typo. Never heard of that grate rate. Very non standard.

Not your fault :)
I hadn't either. It was very clearly a mistake and oversight. Now I need a way to fix it.

Hi,
I too would love any info on this issue. I teach and my students experienced it right now. They too shot The sync seems to shift at an incredible rate... within words... it is not the slow drift we would expect to see. If anyone on this thread has info, please let us know. Thanks! Geri
