Upgraded to FCP7- can't open old projects
on Sep 21, 2012 at 6:39:54 pm

Hello,

I just updated the operating system on my MacPro from 10.4.11 to 10.6.3. Next step- I upgraded from FCS 6.0.6 to 7.

Now I can't open projects created in 6.0.6 and Final Cut freezes up on me when I try to quit the program.

Any thoughts on what might be happening and any possible solutions?

Thanks,
Jim

You could try trashing the preferences for FCP, but the real fix here is to perform a clean install of it all... ie, erase your startup disk after backing it up, then install the OS, upgrade it all the way, then install Studio, and upgrade it all the way. You need not install previous versions of studio or FCP. Just have their serial numbers handy as an upgrade disk will ask for it. All upgrade discs include all of the software BTW...

Jerry,

Thanks for getting back to me. This all started yesterday. I used FCS remover to remove all FCS files. Than installed OS 10.6.3. Once that was finished I loaded Final Cut directly from the disks and received an " Installation Successful" dialog box.

So you are saying- do it all over again? Not a problem just want to confirm.

I generally try to do a clean install of the OS every time there is a new version. (10.4, 10.5, etc) I know it's a pain to get everything back in to place, but it seems to avoid issues like this. So I would recommend starting over with your OS. I like to use Carbon Copy Cloner and make a copy of the current boot disk before starting over so that if you're having a hard time loading anything back on, you can go back and figure it out.

[Russell Lasson] "I know it's a pain to get everything back in to place,"

You're not kidding! This is my second install of FCS 3 on my 2011 iMac. They have notoriously slow DVD drives. Something about rip lock to keep the drives from spinning too fast and noisy when watching a DVD, but for some reason it also affects the FCS 3 installer discs. Takes a couple hours per disc to install. I'm running through it right now.

Oddly enough, my CS5 master collection discs took maybe a total of 4 hours back in December. No riplock effect on them. And of course this year it was all via creative cloud and Apple app store.

Except these damn FCS 3 discs. ARGH.

Jim,
Have you ran "Software Update", to install the late FC.7 updates?

Thanks guys for the help. I'm up and running. I still have an issue upon shutdown of the computer- where I am getting stuck on a blue screen. So, to alleviate that issue I am trashing preferences every time prior to shutdown.

Thanks again for the assistance.
