Had one for a year. It's pretty great and painless.

I see a lot of buyers reviews where they have issues with them...
I bought a WD TB Raid, not near as fast.

Where do you see those?

What kind of issues?

[Chris Tompkins] "Amazon and B&H"

I see. Are they mechanical failures or just people that don't like how long it takes to build a raid, but say it actually performs awesomely and it's the best thing since sliced bread, but they give it two stars? :)

I'll check it out.

I have exactly zero day to day thunderbolt experience so I am just wondering if there's any mechanical issues, points of failure.

I think overall it's great, it's the new firewire, plug in and go.
The speed is amazing. I'm using TB on an iMac with out issue.
When I purchase another TB raid it will be a Pegasus most likely.

[Chris Tompkins] "I bought a WD "
I won't take a WD even if I get it for free.
Two one FW-800/USB and one USD HDs died in the last two months, and both with just few weeks use.

After years of screwing around with mini-sas enclosures, firmware updates, lame http interfaces, pci card jiggering, etc., it's a breath of fresh air. I think even with the 6 disk one we have, the speed isn't limited by the cable but by the drives. I'll be attaching a Blackmagic Ultrastudio express this afternoon. This is on an imac.

Thunderbolt is your friend.

[John Davidson] "Blackmagic Ultrastudio express"

That's what we're running and occasionally we have to unplug the TB and plug it back in to wake it up make it work. Grr!

Eek. Didn't BMG update their software this week? I wonder if that would fix it.

"I'll be attaching a Blackmagic Ultrastudio express this afternoon. This is on an imac." John... how is that working out for you? I just got a new 27" iMac and pegasus r6 18TB raid and am trying to decide between the BlackMagic UltraStudio Express or AJA Io XT. BM is a third the price of the AJA... but doesn't matter if it's free if it doesn't work right, eh? What say you?

Aloha Mick!

I like the blackmagic box. I'm sure the AJA box has a few extra bells and whistles, but I'm pretty darn happy with our BMG Ultrastudio Express. I just ordered the little Blackamagic HDMI/SDI monitoring box (I forget the name) and will be using that on a new iMac and moving the Ultrastudio to a mac mini that is connected to our machine rooms. Both AJA and BMG have great tech support, so either decision you make will be the right one.

The thunderbolt stuff really is useful.
