Flickering horizontal line in FCP playback
on Sep 11, 2012 at 12:30:12 am

I just upgraded my old 15" MacbookPro to a new 15" MacbookPro (Non-Retina Display). Just like my last one, It's primary use will be FCP editing. Like most editors I am still running FCP7 and have not upgraded to FCPX yet. When editing in FCP and viewing video played in the timeline and also in the viewer, I am noticing flickering scrolling horizontal lines occasionally when I play any footage. The lines are mostly apparent when there are quick cuts from one shot to another or if the footage contains quick camera movements. It appears that the next frame is being introduced before the previous frame.

The lines do not appear when using any other applications, and the video looks fine when I export the canvas and play it full screen using Quicktime. This only happens when I play video in FCP. I tried opening the same project on my old laptop and the lines do not appear.

I called AppleCare and they really didn't have any help for me. They said FCP 7 was never fully tested to run on Lion. Also, support for FCP 7 has expired and it is no longer offered. Does anyone know what these "lines" are called? And how to achieve smooth playback? I'm working with AppleProRes 422 HQ footage in a 1920x1080 HDTV 1080i , Square pixel, 23.98 FPS, with Apple ProRes 422 Hq Compressor sequence setting.

THANKS!

Stats:
OSX v 10.8.1
FCP v 7.0.3
Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB

Below are some screengrabs of the problem lines.

Hi Jeffrey,

Thanks for your post, although no one has replied yet. I have a similar problem, working with a bit more humble 15" MBP on 2.4 Ghz, FW 800 (1 Tb) and also Apple ProRes 422 HQ footage @ 25 fps (1080p). Another difference may be that I only have 2x2 Gb Ram for the time being, am off in an hour or so to boost that up to 8 or maybe even 16. I've been told that that may be an issue and should by all means provide visible results. And I have a GT 330M graphics card that apparently cannot be replaced.

I have noticed the horizontal lines occasionally too (somewhat like video tape damage in the old days), but that has never bothered me as much as choppy playback, regardless of the playback settings I have tried, usually during fast camera moves or around edits, especially if they are fast (in this case I'm editing a rock concert with 3 cams).

I hope you get some feedback that might be helpful. Or we spend money and go for Thunderbolt drives. Is that the solution?

In the meantime, best from Michael.

I've also considered replacing

I just recently updated computers as well and came across this same problem. It seems to be fixed for me now.

I first updated the final cut 7.0.3 with the pro applications update for 2010.

I had a hard time updating this through mountain lion so I just downloaded it through the link rather than the app store.

Then I updated the ProApps QuickTime codecs 1.0 through the app store
Here is a link if that doesn't work.

Hopefully this works for you as well. I had completely spaced out on the updates and Lion or Moutain lion don't seem to be the first to remind you about them.

Just FYI: I solved the problem by doing 2 things:

1) I extended my RAM to the max 8 GB possible on this MBP.
2) I realized that you absolutely MUST work in ProRes sequences with adequate ProRes files, no matter how complicated the transferring to ProRes may be, depending on what footage you get.

The "lines" are gone. Quite simple, actually.

All the best ;-)

Hi all.
I had the same issue, FCP 7.0.3 on OSX 10.8.2. and i solved going to Audio/Video Settings and Playbacking Output Video on my MBP Desktop.
I'm using two displays so i can follow editing without this ANOYING flickr.
:D
