Need a fast tutorial on importing to FCP7 fro P2 camera
on Aug 16, 2012 at 3:03:24 pm

A Panasonic P2 camera sits here on my edit desk, full of clips, mocking me. The HPX370P. I tried connecting the firewire cable from it to my snow leopard mac workstation, and I opened FCP and log and transfer. but the computer and FCP do not see the P2 at all. I guess it's less intuitive than I thought it would be. So, would someone please walk me thru a very streamlined way to import the clips? Thanks!

Do you have P2 Drives installed on comp.?

While you're at it, download the free software P2CMS from panny.

Use THAT software to off-load the card media to your comp FIRST.
This verifies as it copies.

THEN, L&T into edit.

Also, try USB instead of FW from cam.

In my limited use of Panasonic Cameras I seem to remember that there was a setting in the user menu that had to be changed to make the camera act like a deck rather then a camera there by allowing Final Cut to see it, but chances are you just need the P2 Drivers installed like Chris said.

Steve.

Thanks, I thought it would be a little more streamlined and plug and play than this.

P2 is not plug and play. The very first thing you want to do is Back up the P2 card data to 2 separate hard drives. These will be your Tape Masters. Never log and transfer from the P2 card itself. Camera has to be in device mode in order for computer to see the P2 card. If FW doesn't see the card, try USB.

Well, that kind of sucks. But thanks for the tips. The P2 wasn't my choice, I'd rather be using non proprietary SD cards for less money and directly importing them.

Doesn't matter what tapeless format you are working with. Unless you follow the workflow correctly, you will get burned in the end.

This is a terrific reference for me, but it is missing the hardware hookup part that comes before I can put the tutorial to use.

Update; solved it, it was the stupidest, simple thing: we weren't holding down the third menu button long enough for the unit to switch modes. Sometimes things are too obvious to consider, you know?

Everything's good now, but geez, talk about weird, when most USB devices just automatically show up on a desktop once you plug them in.
